Our Adventure

I am excited to share the details of our Mull sea Kayak Exploration. As one of Coastal Spirit's first significant  adventures, in the early days.  It's an ideal one to share again to celebrate Coastal Spirits 20 years, in 20271

Mull is a truly special location featuring incredible wildlife - dolphins, otters, sea eagles and occasionally whales, stunning geology, and a breathtaking coastline.

Our base is at a super campsite called Salen Bay Campsite, overlooking the Sound of Mull.  You need to book your place for six nights (more information in detail, you'll come across soon). If the weather is poor we have a comfortable base to consider doing day paddles, while if the weather is settled we can head off on expedition.

We will meet on the evening of the 29th of April, and review the weather forecast together to determine the best options avaiable. We look forward to working with you on route planning, decision-making, navigation tips, and expedition tactics to make the most of our trip.

Each day will aim to offer opportunities to explore hidden coastlines, paddle beneath cliffs, relax in calm bays, and spot wildlife. Mull is one of the richest areas for wildlife and well known for its population of white tailed sea eagles.  Mull provides a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in nature and enjoy beaches that few others get to see.

If the weather is unsettled, we have a static camping base with hot showers and toilets  This allows us more choices of coastline to do day trips, rather being grounded by the weather.  We can discuss whether to head off on the expedition when the weather is settled or continue with day paddles.  Once each trip is finished we have a base camp to return to in a comfortable setting and a place to leave extra vehicles.  Sharing vehicles means less vehicles being left in a village when we go off on expedition.  Instead they are left at the campsite!

If you are camping and you have two tents, consider leaving one set up at our public campsite while the other tent comes with you on expedition. It's one less task to do!

A small group size with a high guide ratio increases the chances of making the most of the conditions and having a wonderful time, too.  It can also be worthwhile bringing a walking kit so we have a full range of options if it becomes too windy to paddle.

What's included in the cost?

  • Five days guiding and coaching
  • Two highly experienced and qualified advanced sea kayak leaders and advanced coachs

Is this course suitable for me?

If you meet the following guide, then you're likely to be in a good place and more able to really enjoy your time on Mull.  This course is aimed at moderate water paddlers who are ...

  • happy paddling in f4 winds, from any direction and have experienced stronger
  • happy in the associated swell, produced by the above wind strength of 0.5 -1.0m
  • able to paddle 20km with a loaded sea kayak
  • happy wild camping and have around 10 days experience (could also be from other adventures such as open boating, or walking)

Ideally you will have paddled with Coastal Spirit before, if not we can arrange a phone call chat.  You are also self-sufficient in terms of kayak and paddling equipment.  At this present time, we are unable to take international clients, unless you have your sea kayak and are self-sufficient.

What's not included?

  • Transport to and from Oban.

  • Ferry to and from the island of Mull and Craignure.  Information on crossing from Oban is here - you need to arrive on Thursday the 29th April by 1800.  If you've had a long journey, consider traveling up the previous day so you can start the course more relaxed and fresh. Otherwise, you need to book your ferry for the 29/4 and the 5/5/2027.

  • Campsite fee's - You need to book for six nights from the 29/4 to the 4/5/2027 at Salen Bay Campsite

  • food.  Its a self catering course and ideally we will aim to cook outside together if the weather allows

  • Personal travel, accident and holiday insurance - essential.

  • Any unforeseen extra expenses

How to get to Craignure on Mull?

There is a regular CalMac ferry from Oban to Craignure on Mull, and the crossing is 50 minutes.  If the weather allows, it's worth staying on deck for as long as you can, as sightings of Dolphins, Minke Whales, and Golden Eagles, are possible.  Its worth arriving early on the island so you can decompress and to allow for any challenges with the CalMac ferry!

It makes good sense to travel share where possible unless you have plans to travel on and stay longer.

Where do we meet?

We will meet on the island of Mull, on Monday the 26th, early evening at our campsite which is  20 minutes from Craignure Ferry Terminal. Salen Bay Campsite

How to book your place?

Ideally Zoe and Roger, know you.  If not take time to summarise your sea kayaking experience, which may also be useful to arrange a time to speak over the phone.  Otherwise if we do know you, complete our booking & consent form here

Simon Turnbull

"I've just completed a two day 4* Sea kayak training course with Roger. Having been coached by Roger in the past, I choose to do this course with Roger because I knew I would get a great deal from the course. My expectations were certainly well and truly met"

Tavi Murray

"And I'm probably learning more from his mentoring now, as my paddling horizons expand, than ever before. I can't count how many questions I've asked... and he's answered. Roger has the knack of making that suggestion that radically changes your thinking and moves your paddling on in leaps and bounds."

Stella King

"There are a number of wonderful things about Roger. He has a very light touch in his coaching, and he's always smiling and encouraging you to relax into the enjoyment of the day"
