This discipline-specific award is designed to indicate that the candidate has the skill level to safely paddle and lead other competent paddlers on sections of moderate water. A moderate water (tidal) sea kayak leader will have the all-round paddling ability, with rescue, incident management and leadership required to undertake trips with a group of paddlers who have the paddling skills required, but not necessarily the experience, to operate in a self-sufficient manner in moderate (tidal) water conditions.
The range of sea kayak journeys should include a variety of coastlines, periods of limited visibility, tidal waters up to 2 knots, wind up to and including Beaufort Force 4, crossings not exceeding 2 nautical miles launching and landing through surf up to 1 meter.
This is a two day assessment, although sometimes the assessment can be run in one day due to suitable conditions and only one client. The assessemt focuses on your personal skills, assisted/self rescues, decision making, tidal planning, navigation and group leadership. You will contact, organise a group of 3-6 paddlers. If your not able to gather a suitable group of paddlers together Coastal Spirit may be able too.
To attend an assessment course, first register with British Canoeing – we can only confirm candidates who have completed this step. Further information is available on the British Canoeing website.
The following previous experience and prerequisites for assessment are required:

Here's a few photos of the last couple of months and a short raw video clip to remind you what we've been up too.

"The composite Virgo has been amazing. Very high performance, a dream to be able to accelerate quickly, as well as a wonderful carry to and from the water!
I've managed twice to paddle in the Swellies (solo and then with a friend) and once on South Stack tide race, on the ebb solo. South Stack was perfect as the wave faces were long and I could actually carve and change position on the wave. The boat really wants to surf!" - Roger Chandler, Coastal Spirit

Roger has the knack of making that suggestion that radically changes your thinking and moves your paddling on in leaps and bounds."
"I've just completed a two day 4* Sea kayak training course with Roger. Having been coached by Roger in the past, I choose to do this course with Roger because I knew I would get a great deal from the course. My expectations were certainly well and truly met"
"There are a number of wonderful things about Roger. He has a very light touch in his coaching, and he's always smiling and encouraging you to relax into the enjoyment of the day"
